What's love got to do with it?

Mindy Cooper has recently broken off her engagement with town scion Bernard Morton. While she’s basically at peace with her decision not to marry her former boss, there is a part of her that wonders what her life would have been like had she gone through with the ceremony. A life of leisure as opposed to one of hard work and toil does have its attractions. However, so does being free…

“I still don’t see how you could have broken up with Bernard,” Mindy’s sister Sandi observed. “He’s loaded. Come to think of it, I don’t see how you could have broken up with Tyler Schuyler. He’s going to be loaded someday too.”

“Tyler’s a nice person but he’s too immature for me,” Mindy explained. “Bernard Morton, on the other hand, isn’t a nice person but he’s also too immature for me.”

“How can you say that?” Sandi demanded. “Bernard is way older than you. He’s seriously flirting with fifty.”

“He’s past flirting,” Mindy assured her.

“Oh, yeah? How old is he?”

“He’d never tell me but age doesn’t have anything to do with being mature, Sandi. Bernard will always be a selfish, immature jerk.”

“A rich selfish, immature jerk,” Sandi corrected. “That makes a difference. Wouldn’t you like to have a rich husband so you don’t have to work at that lousy paper? It barely pays enough for the gas to get to work.”

“Then why on earth did you decide to take a job there?”

“It was either working at the newspaper or being the lady at the Laundromat who makes sure no one is stealing other people’s laundry. The newspaper seemed a tiny bit more interesting although there isn’t much difference in the pay. Now let’s get back to you. Are you happy now that you’ve dumped Bernard?”

“I’m happier than I was when I was with him.”

“Do you care if he starts dating someone else?”

Mindy narrowed her eyes. “Such as?”

“Such as me.”

“I thought you were interested in Peter Van Husen.”

“Mindy, you know me. I’m interested in all men but you have to admit that Bernard is more appealing than Peter.”

“I don’t know about that. Peter’s very good looking, like a young Robert Redford.”

“And Bernard looks like a middle-aged Warren Beatty. Half a dozen of one and six of the other, I’d say. But the clincher is that Bernard has a ton of money and Peter doesn’t.”

“Bernard might also be going to jail if he gets convicted of killing Fritz Weiss,” Mindy pointed out. “He’s the most likely suspect, I’d say.”

“Bernard? He’s a pussy cat. Why would he kill that creepy old chemist? Besides, suppose he did do it and winds up in jail. If he has a wife when that happens, who do you think will get all his money?”

“You’re terrible!”

“I’m not terrible. I’m pragmatic. Look, Mindy, I’m going to be 30 in a few years and I’d like to have a rich husband before that happens and before my looks totally fade. Do you think I’m going to be this gorgeous forever?”

“Don’t you want to love your husband when you get married?”

“In the immortal words of Tina Turner, what’s love got to do with it? I want to be happy and I won’t be happy until I have a lot of money at my disposal. Look at what happened to Mom—she married for love and Dad left her for another woman.”

“Dad also left her because Mom is nuts.”

“What’s the difference? All I’m saying is that when I get married, I’m going into it with open eyes. So you don’t care if I start cozying up to your ex-fiance?”

“Help yourself,” Mindy replied. As if on cue, Sandy’s cell phone rang. Picking it up, a wide smile crawled across her face. “Well, what do you know—it’s Bernard. If he wants to take me out tonight, why don’t I tell Peter that you’re free?”

Mindy sighed. “Go ahead,” she said. “A young Robert Redford is better than no date at all.”

“Now you’re getting smart,” Sandi encouraged before breathing into her cell phone, “Hello, Bernie, what’s up?”

Plenty of Attitude

In Schuyler Square, Mindy Cooper has decided to return to her job as a reporter on the local newspaper, The Schuyler Square Times, after ending her engagement to her former boss, Bernard Morton. Although bitter over her shattered wedding plans, Mindy is determined to get back to the work she loves: reporting the truth.

"Mindy! It's good to have you back! Are you here to stay or are you planning another undercover assignment that will keep you away from work for the next six months or so?" Jack Harding, the other reporter on the paper, welcomed Mindy back.

"Well, Jack, I would have to say that after what I've been through, I don't think I'll ever leave the paper again. The pay may be lousy around here but at least it's reliable."

"Yeah, I'm sorry things didn't work out for you with that Morton creep. He didn't sound reliable at all."

"I suppose it's better I found out before we tied the knot." Mindy sighed. "So where are we on the murder of the Kutrate Kemical chemist? Any leads?"

Jack shook his head. "The police talked to your ex-fiance but as far as I know they don't have anything to hang on him. What are your thoughts? You worked with that Fritz guy. Did anybody hate him enough to off him?"

"Not as much as they hated Bernard. I honestly don't know who would have killed Fritz. He was kind of subversive but he wasn't nasty. I liked him."

"Subversive? Meaning?"

"Well, he worked closely with Bernard on Fat Off--Kutrate Kemical's weight loss aid. He thought Bernard was ripping him off--which he was."

"But why would Morton want to kill him? A smart chemist would be worth a lot more to him alive than dead."

"I don't think Bernard did it," Mindy said slowly. "Bernard is not a nice person but he's not a murderer."

"Then who?"

"I don't know but if you don't mind, I'm going to leave the story in your capable hands. I've had enough of Bernard Morton and Kutrate Kemicals to last me a lifetime."

"No problem. You can do everything else around here. Oh, the boss did hire someone new. She should be around here someplace."

"You're kidding! To do what?"

"Reporting, editing, making coffee--she seems like a nice enough person but I haven't read anything she's written yet. You'll like her. Her name is Sandi. With an i."

Mindy stopped cleaning off her desk. "Sandi with an i? What does she look like?"

Jack whistled. "Like a babe. Kind of like you--only better. No offense."

"I'm not surprised she looks like me," Mindy snapped. "I think the Sandi with an i the boss hired is my sister! What is this, a remake of the Dear Abby-Ann Landers rivalry?"

On cue, Sandi walked into the newsroom wearing a low cut dress, thigh high boots and plenty of attitude. "Isn't this fun?" she asked. "Mindy, we're working together!" She hugged Mindy tightly before asking, "Oh, another thing--you don't mind if I date Bernard, do you?"

Maid of Honor

"If I were you, I'd elope," Betsy Cooper advised her daughter. "No muss, no fuss and you won't have to deal with caterers. Heaven only knows how clean they keep their kitchens! You'd be much better off going to the local justice of the peace and tying the knot there."

Mindy felt her teeth grind together, undoubtedly ruining the thousands and thousands of dollars that she'd put into them over the years. That always happened whenever she saw her mother. She ground her teeth until her jaw ached and her molars pulsed. "We're considering eloping," she said, "but a real wedding might be nice tool." Actually--until her mother had told that she should elope--Mindy had wanted a quickie ceremony without any guests. But since that was what her mother was advising, Mindy didn't want to do that. There was something about their relationship that instantaneously turned her into a contrary ten-year-old.

"True," Betsy said thoughtfully. "Then Sandi could be your maid of honor."

"I don't think so. I have closer friends here in Schuyler Square who I'd rather have as my maid of honor."

"Mindy, that simply isn't done and it would be cruel not to include Sandi. I don't know why you can't get along with her. She's your only sister. You two should be better friends."

Like that was ever going to happen. It would be easier for Mindy to be friends with a barracuda than it would for her to be friends with Sandi. "I think your idea about eloping is the best one. Bernard and I want to keep it simple."

"You could have a simple wedding."

"Two minutes ago you wanted me to elope!"

"I'm entitled to change my mind, aren't I?"

"The only reason your in favor of a wedding is so Sandi can be in it. Why don't you bug her to get married? I'm sure she'd let you take care of all the details."

"That's because Sandi has always listened to me, unlike some people." Betsy sighed dramatically. "Well, do what you want. You always do anyhow." A knock on Mindy's front door interrupted them. Gratefully, Mindy got to her feet. Maybe it was Bernard. She hoped it wasn't Tyler. Truly, she wasn't sure who it could be since in spite of what she'd told her mother, Mindy really didn't have too many friends in Schuyler Square.

She pulled open the door and gasped. Standing in front of her was a tall, stunning redhead who was a dead ringer for Ginger Grant of Gilligan's Island fame. "What are you doing here?" Mindy demanded.

"Where else would I be?" her sister Sandi asked. "My big sister is getting married. Of course I want to be here for the big day."
