A Very Bad Way to Start the Day

In Schuyler Square, Mindy Cooper is somewhat nervously planning her wedding to her boss, Bernard Morton. Unfortunately, Mindy has her hands full as her mother and her sister offer too many suggestions and too little help. Also, Mindy's sister Sandi seems to have designs on Mindy's fiance. Mindy is ready to throw in the towel and return Bernard's engagement ring while Sandi is more than ready to move in and take her big sister's place at the altar...

"Mindy, you look terrible," Betsy Cooper announced. "What's wrong?"

"Tyler came to see me and he pretty much ripped me to shreds," Mindy announced. "He was so nasty--I could hardly believe it was the same sweet guy that I dated for so many months!"

"Well, you did dump him for your boss," her mother pointed out. "Not many men take something like that very well. Now about the reception...I know that Bernard is too cheap to pay for anyone good so I'm thinking that a DJ might be the way to go. I've found a few names for you to call. Just make sure he includes a lot of 70s stuff. I want to have a good time too, remember."

Sandi came into the kitchen and sat down next to Mindy. "Have you gotten my bridesmaid dress yet?"

"No, I thought you were going to handle that."

"Well, I found the perfect dress but I can't afford it. Give me your credit card and I'll pick it up."

Mindy felt her blood pressure soar. "Sandi," she began but was interrupted by the arrival of her fiance.

"Greetings," Bernard said, strolling through the back door. "Mom, Sis, Wifey--what's up?"

Mindy winced. Was Bernard going to call her 'wifey' once they were married? "Bernard, we were just making some more wedding plans."

"Well, you'd better get to it, kiddo. The big day is fast approaching."

"Too fast," Mindy muttered.

"Bernard," Sandi purred, "I was just telling Mindy about my bridesmaid dress. It's divine--purple with a leopard print and a very plunging neckline. I look gorgeous in it."

Bernard leered at her. "I have the feeling that you'd look gorgeous in--or out--of anything, Sis."

Why am I marrying this man? What is wrong with me? It's not too late to get out of it. A sharp knock on the back door interrupted Mindy's panicked thought process. Opening the door, Mindy recognized police officer Peter Van Husen, Mavis Schuyler's former boy toy. He was still extremely good looking, Mindy noted, in an early Robert Redford kind of way. "Officer Van Husen," she said. "What can I do for you."

"I'm looking for Bernard Morton," Officer Van Husen said.

"Well, you found him," Bernard replied from the chair next to Sandi's. Mindy noticed that her fiance's hand was wrapped around her sister's waste. This day was just getting better and better. "What's up?"

"I need for you to come down to the station, sir," Officer Van Husen said. "One of your employees has been murdered."

"Oh, yeah? Who?"

"Your chief chemist, Fritz--"

Mindy screamed. "Fritz is dead? Who would murder Fritz?"

The police officer kept his eyes on Bernard. "That's what we plan to find out."
