Losing Weight the Easy Way

“Tiffany, is that you?” Jennifer Clark stopped in the hallway of Schuyler Square High School and stared across the tile floor at Tiffany. “Are you losing weight?”

Tiffany wasn’t too thrilled with Jennifer’s tone of voice—she sounded like she was saying ‘are you turning into a daffodil?’—like it was totally impossible for Tiffany to drop a few pounds. “Yes, I’ve lost a little weight,” Tiffany replied.

“But how? I mean, you’re always down in the cafeteria eating something with a gazillion calories and I’ve never seen you break a sweat in gym class. How are you losing weight?”

Tiffany smiled in what she hoped was both a superior and mysterious manner. “I have my ways.”

Jennifer took a step closer. “You can tell me,” she urged. “What kind of diet are you on? I want to lose weight before the prom so if you could give me some hints I’d really appreciate it.”

This was wonderful! It was beyond wonderful! That Miss Uber Popular, Miss Homecoming Queen, Miss Always Has Perfect Hair and No Cellulite would be asking fat, unpopular Tiffany for diet tips was the best thing that had ever happened to her—other than dating Rex and finding the can of Fat Off, that is. “Just watch what you eat, Jen. It’s not hard.”

“There has to be more to it than that,” Jennifer whispered. “What’s your secret?”

Tiffany paused. Did she really want to share Fat Off with Jennifer? There wasn’t much left in the can and even though Tiffany had lost an amazing 20 pounds in two weeks, she wanted to take some more weight off before the prom too. Besides, Jennifer was highly untrustworthy. Everyone knew that girls who looked like Jennifer seldom kept their mouths shut about anything. Plus Tiffany had already set up a meeting with the chemist at Schuyler Industries. Jennifer would just have to wait until Fat Off was for sale like everyone else. “It’s all about will power,” Tiffany replied.

“Will power! I just saw you eat three Hostess fruit pies and wash them down with about a gallon of Coke! You don’t have any will power!”

“Then I guess I just have good genes,” Tiffany said. “I’m finally growing out of my baby fat.”

Jennifer shook her head. “No way. There’s more to it than that and you’d better tell me or—“

“Or what?” Tiffany challenged.

“Or I’m going to tell the gym teacher that you have an eating disorder!”

No wonder Tiffany had never liked Jennifer. “All right,” Tiffany hissed. The last thing she wanted was Mrs. Bradshaw breathing down her neck and dragging her to the school counselor for lectures on nutrition. “Meet me after school and I’ll show you how I’m losing weight.”

Jennifer smiled triumphantly. “It will be our little secret, Tiffany,” she promised.

Tiffany certainly hoped so because if anyone else in Schuyler Square found out about Fat Off, her diet would definitely be over.
